Geographic Information Systems (GIS) can be defined as “an organized collection of computer hardware, software, geographic data, and personnel designed to efficiently capture, store, update, manipulate, analyze, and display all forms of geographically referenced information” (J. Star and J Estes, 1993).
MMWD began using GIS in 1992, choosing ESRI, Inc. ArcInfo software. The district now uses ESRI's ArcGIS software to make the majority of maps it produces for both internal and public use. GIS is now a fundamental part of the design, tracking, and update of information for MMWD's water delivery system. GIS is now also being used extensively by the district for natural resource and open space management. MMWD's GIS Department also works closely with other Marin County agencies through MarinMap, and also maintains membership in URISA and is a corporate sponsor of BAAMA.

The LAFCo application (which shows a variety of jurisdictional boundaries including MMWD's Board Divisions boundaries) is the primary interactive mapping application for detailed and up to date district information. Marin County's Local Area Formation Commission (LAFCo) mapping application, in combination with Marin County and MarinMap's Internet Map Services, provide the best examples of the dynamic, or interactive, maps that MMWD uses more and more often to disseminate mapped information. (note: to see MMWD's Board Division boundaries in greater detail simply check 'Water Services' on the 'Layers' menu and zoom into the area of interest.)
