This past weekend our entire family (23 of us) met at Grants Pass, Oregon, for our annual family reunion. The main event was jet boat riding up the Rogue River on Saturday morning and early afternoon. The remaining time was spent lounging around the pool. Little did we realize when planning this event that the temperatures would climb to a raging 108 degrees.
It was indeed a heat wave. We were blessed we had planned this trip around waterways. I say blessed because when thinking of a wave, the brain refuses to connect the word "wave" with temperature. I can handle terms such as "cold snap" and "inclement"—even "threatening" computes. However, the term "heat wave" causes my brain to shut down. Like a pansy, I wilt in heat.
To my understanding, Marin also experienced some temperatures that rallied close to the 100 degree mark this past week. What did you do to survive? Did your plants suffer or manage to breeze through without a limp leaf?
Our gardens will thrive in heat if we take all necessary steps to prepare for temperature spikes. Just as hydration is critical for us in heat, it is also key to your plants' survival. Watering in the wee hours will provide the nourishment to the root system before plant transpiration and soil moisture evaporation are at their peak. Avoid sprinkling the foliage during the heat of the day or the leaves can burn, much like our skin. The additional key is to prevent evaporation from the soil by installing a thick layer of mulch around the root system. Did you have everything covered, including yourself?
With that said, and after reviewing the Marin County weather forecast for the Fourth of July, it appears you are in for a comfortable 80-degree week with no rain in sight. This will make for a great day to picnic, BBQ, and watch parades—unlike the monsoon forecasts of rain and record-breaking temperatures predicted for this northeast section of California. (Are we really only 300 miles away from Marin?)
When planning your picnics, you might want to include a hydrating recipe shared by one of my granddaughters. She served an infused water that helped quench our thirst that I wanted to pass along to you.
Citrus Mint Infused Water
| Citrus mint infused water
10 cups of water
3 thinly sliced lemons
2 thinly sliced limes
1 sliced cucumber
10 coarsely chopped mint leaves
Add all ingredients to the water and refrigerate overnight before serving. Very refreshing!
