Infrastructure Maintenance Update – Jan. 18, 2023
In February, some residents may see Marin Water crews in their neighborhood as they clean water mains in parts of the District's service area. Water main cleaning, also known as flushing, is an important step we take to deliver clean, reliable water.
What is water main cleaning?
In regular use, water mains will accumulate sediment. To flush this build-up, our crews will turn on select hydrants along water main lines. Water comes out of these hydrants with enough velocity to clean the water main. The water is released onto the street and into the storm drain system.
Will customer water services be impacted during the cleaning?
You may notice water in the streets during the cleaning process and slight drops in water pressure. After the cleaning, you may see air in your water lines first or temporary water discoloration in your plumbing. If you notice these effects, we recommend running cold water for a short time to remove any loose sediment in the pipeline that runs from our water main to your home.
