The San Rafael Canal District Pipeline Replacement Project will replace aging and leak-prone underground water pipeline beneath a number of streets in the Canal District. Service laterals, which connect a home or business to the water system, will also be replaced as part of this project. In total, this project will replace 3,400 feet of 1960s-era water pipeline with seismically resilient, welded steel pipe.
Funded largely through a grant from the California Department of Water Resources, this project will strengthen the community's water system and ensure high quality drinking water now and for the future.

Project Description
This project consists of replacement of existing water main piping and service lines around various parts of the Canal District in San Rafael. Once complete, 3,400 feet of 8-inch, 6-inch, and 4-inch welded steel pipe will replace asbestos cement pipe that was installed in the 1960's. Leak-prone plastic service lines will be replaced with more reliable copper services.
Benefits
Installation of new welded steel pipe and copper services will further fortify the Canal District's water infrastructure to ensure high quality drinking water for more residents of the community well into the future.
