Field & Classroom Programs (Grades K – 6)

Classroom Presentations & Water Walk Field Trips (Grades 3-5)

First, let one of our Marin Water experts visit your classroom and teach your students about the water cycle, our local water supply, watershed ecology and the importance of preservation. Classroom presentations last 30-45 minutes.

Then, join us on a walking tour of the Mt. Tamalpais Watershed and learn about ecology, water supply, and water efficiency. This field trip teaches students about the source and journey of their water while inspiring them to take action to conserve our most precious resource. Typical Water Walk field trips cover approximately 1.5 miles of relatively flat terrain and take about 2.5 hours to complete. We can accommodate up to 30 students per trip; a minimum of 15 students is required. A classroom presentation before the field trip is recommended. Please note: Water Walks are not offered during the winter months of November-February. We offer bus reimbursements on a first-come, first-serve basis.

A closer look at the classroom and field trip offerings

Our presentations and field trips support Next Generation Science Standards relevant to each grade level.

Our third grade presentations and field trips foster increased awareness and curiosity of the natural world. There are 184 bird species living within the Mt. Tam Watershed, providing a wide variety of important ecosystem services and serving as critical indicators of ecological change. On field trips, students will use an "I Notice, I Wonder, It Reminds Me Of" exploration method to practice noticing patterns in bird calls and behaviors, and constructing explanations for what they observe.

Our fourth grade program invites students to look for and analyze adaptations in nature. What unique features allow the plants and animals found throughout our watershed to thrive in their local environment? Through a BEETLES guided activity, fourth-graders will observe and understand the features of some of the many plants and animals native to the Mt. Tam Watershed.

Our fifth grade content highlights ecosystems, featuring the diverse community of plants and animals that thrive at Lake Lagunitas. On our field trips, we encourage our visiting fifth graders to consider: What lives here? Utilizing a BEETLES Ecosystems activity, students will search for evidence of these plants and creatures, and understand the interconnectedness of living and non-living organisms, and our human impact.

ZunZun Musical Watershed Assemblies (Grades K-6)

Marin Water is again partnering with ZunZun, winners of the 2016 Silicon Valley Water Conservation Award in Education, to offer their dynamic, engaging, musical assembly program to elementary schools in Marin Water’s service area. ZunZun engages students in an informative and fun assembly with segments focused on where your water comes from, watershed awareness, and water and energy conservation. Fun songs, audience participation, and memorable jingles make this educational program enjoyable for and accessible to students. Assemblies are appropriate for K-6th graders and are 30-35 minutes in length. Bi-lingual presentations (Spanish-English) are available upon request.
