WaterSense labels two types of irrigation controllers that can help homeowners and businesses make their irrigation scheduling more water-efficient: Weather-based irrigation controllers use local weather and landscape conditions to tailor watering schedules, and soil moisture-based irrigation controllers monitor moisture levels in the soil to prevent irrigation when water is not needed.

With proper installation, programming, and maintenance, these self-adjusting controllers can reduce overwatering. Install a WaterSense labeled irrigation controller and receive a rebate up to $100.

Note: Rachio 3 irrigation controllers are also available at a discount, up to 70%, through a partnership program with Rachio. Customers may apply for only one controller incentive, not both.

Marin Water’s partnership with Flume is helping provide big discounts on Rain Bird RC2 8-station irrigation controllers, which will soon integrate with the Flume Smart Home Water Monitor to transform the way you water your landscape. Normally priced at $230, these discounted controllers are available for a limited time to Marin Water customers for just $50! With effortless scheduling and intelligent watering insights, you’ll save big on water bills and efficiently irrigate your yard.

Lawns typically need four times more water than climate appropriate shrubs and perennials, which makes converting lawns to sustainable landscapes one of the best ways to use water more efficiently.

Marin Water is offering customers a rebate of up to $3 per square foot for replacing grass in their landscapes. Homeowner reimbursements will be capped at 1,000 square feet, and business owners capped at 5,000 square feet.

The base rebate of $1.50 per square foot has fewer requirements to provide customers with more flexibility while still achieving water savings. The top tier rebate of $3 per square foot is available to customers who follow best management practices to optimize long-term water savings, including:

  • Sheet mulching in place versus physical removal of lawn.
  • Installation of mostly California native low water use plants over at least 50% of the project area based on mature plant size.
  • Installation of an alternative water source or stormwater capture feature such as a rain garden, rainwater harvesting cistern, or graywater system.
Pre-approval is required to participate in this program; the first step is to submit an application.

Note: Signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom in September 2022, Assembly Bill 2142 ensures that turf replacement rebates issued in 2022 and beyond will be exempt from state income tax requirements. Federal tax rules still apply.

When you install a kit to divert water from your washing machine to your garden, it’s called a Laundry-to-Landscape graywater system. We have partnered with the Urban Farmer Store to offer a $125 discount on your purchase of a graywater kit.

Rainwater harvesting is the practice of collecting rainwater from rooftops and storing it for later use. This practice can reduce potable water use while also helping to limit erosion and polluted runoff that harm our creeks. Just one inch of rain on a 1,000 square-foot roof produces 600 gallons of runoff. Rainwater harvesting systems and roof gutters should be cleaned seasonally.

Marin Water offers up to 50 cents per gallon of storage, not to exceed actual cost. Total rebates for rain barrels and cisterns may not exceed $1,000 per site.

Remember that harvested rainwater, whether from a rain barrel or a cistern, should not be used for drinking or for human consumption. It should be used for irrigation purposes only.
