Creek Notes: Lagunitas Creek Spawner Update

Greetings! Eric Ettlinger here to share some observations as the 2023-24 spawning season comes to a close.

The 2023-24 Coho Salmon spawning season ended in late January, with the last two salmon seen in San Geronimo Creek. In Lagunitas Creek, Marin Water survey crews haven’t seen any salmon since Jan. 10, or rather, we haven’t been able to get into the creek to see them. Due to heavy rainfall this winter, stream flows have been too high to walk in the creek or see spawning areas.

Creek Notes
Suddenly So Many Salmon

Heavy rain associated with this year’s “Super El Nino,” forecasted by weather experts, has been slow to arrive in the Bay Area. The dry start to the rainy season has kept both stream flows and salmon counts unseasonably low.

Corte Madera – The Marin County Fire Department will conduct a prescribed fire today – Wednesday, October 18 – on the Mount Tamalpais Watershed in coordination with Marin Water.

The operation will take place in the Rock Spring area of the watershed, between Stinson Beach and Mill Valley, and residents may see or smell smoke from the burn even from several miles away. The community is asked to refrain from calling 911 to report smoke coming from the planned burn area to avoid overwhelming emergency dispatch lines.
